Yeast infection symptoms vary depending on which part of the body is being attacked. The disease is caused by a fungus called Candida which causes the body to produce abnormal amounts of yeast. Although yeast is found everywhere in the body especially in moist areas such as the mouth and vagina too much of it leads to an infection. The most common types are vaginal yeast infection, thrush, diaper rash and nail bed infection.
Here are some symptoms to watch out for.

Vaginal yeast infection
This is also known as candidiasis and is caused by a number of species of candida called candida albicans. The easiest way to identify this infection is severe itching in and around the vagina area. This may be accompanied by a burning sensation and pain during urination. Another sign is redness in the vagina and the vulva areas. A woman having this infection may experience pain and discomfort during sexual intercourse due to soreness and irritation around the vagina and vulva. Some women get a thick discharge that looks like cottage cheese.
Oral yeast infection
This is also known as thrush and is common in babies as well as older children. Babies usually get this infection from the mother through breast feeding, or due to improper cleaning of feeding bottles.Thrush can be identified by white lacy patches on the palate, tongue and else where in the mouth which sometimes looks like curdled milk. This could cause pain while eating or drinking. Attempt to clean off the white area could result in bleeding.
Diaper rash
This is caused by skin irritation due to prolonged contact with feces and urine. This infection is common in babies and young children due to the presence of persistent moisture in and around the genital areas. Diaper rash that is not treated immediately may lead to yeast infection. The affected area appears red. Diaper areas such as the buttocks, upper thigh, and the genital areas may be affected. It is usually indicated by red bumps which causes irritation and itching.
Nail bed infection
This type causes discoloration of the nail. It can be very painful and there may be puss around the nail, swelling of the skin around the nail.
Men with yeast infections may suffer symptoms such as burning sensation when urinating and also during sexual intercourse, itching and irritation on the head of the penis. There may also be red bumps around the groin area.

The first thing to do when you have these symptoms is to visit your doctor for confirmation and to get an accurate diagnosis so as to ensure effective treatment.
